>• Lyrical Challenge. The NMPA (National Music Publisher’s Association) has brokered a partnership with lyrics site, Rap Genius (www.rapgenius.com) that gives NMPA’s publisher members the opportunity to enter into a settlement and license. “This unique site allows music fans to connect with songwriters and the emotions they express through their lyrics,” said David Israelite, NMPA president and CEO. “I applaud Rap Genius for respecting the rights of songwriters and compensating them fairly for their work.” On Rap Genius, fans and the artists themselves explore lyrics interactively via line-by-line annotations that they can read, create, and edit as part of a worldwide knowledge project. Beyond music, it is the definitive source of annotated texts online, including poetry, news, history, science, the bible, and more.
>• Listen Up. Pandora audience metrics show listener hours for April 2014 were 1.70 billion, an increase of 30% from 1.31 billion during the same period last year. Active listeners were 76.0 million at the end of April, an increase of 8% from 70.1 million during the same time period last year, and Pandora’s share of total U.S. radio listening in April 2014 was 9.28%, an increase from 7.33% at the same time last year. The leading internet radio service has also announced a new advertising solution—Promoted Stations designed to drive listeners to custom content. They integrate within a listener’s station list under “Stations You Might Like.”
>• iPad, iPod, iPhone, iHeart. The first ever iHeart Radio Awards show in Los Angeles on May 1 was broadcast live on NBC and on Clear Channel radio stations nationwide. Blake Shelton was honored for Country Song of the Year, “Boys Round Here.” Music fans cast more than 65 million votes across Facebook and Twitter to choose the winners…
>• Up All Night To Get Lucky. If you’re familiar with “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk then you’ve heard the unmistakeable rhythm guitar of disco architect Nile Rogers. Fans now have the opportunity to enjoy Rogers and Chic at the Grand Opening event at the Hard Rock Hotel, Ibiza on June 13. Ibiza, a long time jet setter terminus, is an exotic island situated in the Mediterranean near Spain.
>• Music City Meetings. Music Biz President Jim Donio has announced that the organization’s 2015 event will be held in Nashville at the Sheraton Music City May 12-14 after staying in Los angeles for the past four years. The group was previously known as NARM.
>• 1-4-2. Drew Hale will act as Creative Director/plugger for Love Monkey and Tom-Leis Music. Both publishers have co-publishing songwriter ventures with Sony/ATV.
>• Investors A Twitter. Twitter stock (NYSE: TWTR) has been taking a beating this week in what some pundits are calling a free fall. The company has tumbled from its high of $74.73 to around $30 on Wed. afternoon 5/7. The steep declines were triggered by the expiration of Twitter’s lock-up period for about 400 million shares, a time during which inside investors are not allowed to sell their shares.
