And so, please welcome the newly renamed Leadership Music Summit, previously known as the Digital Summit and officially scheduled for Tues., Sept. 10 at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works. The new moniker is designed to allow the event to be more responsive to each year’s hot button issues.
The upcoming Summit is subtitled Digital Solutions Powered by the Entrepreneurial Spirit. Co-chairs are Leadership Music alumni Heather McBee (America’s Morning Show, Cumulus Media) and Cameo Carlson (Borman Entertainment). “Our goal is to introduce members of the music community to the growing number of digital marketing and platform opportunities that are being developed by entrepreneurs,” says McBee.
“There is such a great spirit of entrepreneurship in Nashville,” says Carlson. “For the music industry, a key challenge is finding the best pathway to prioritize goals. There are so many ways to connect to fans. The day should also give entrepreneurs a better idea of the kinds of things that matter to artists. Hopefully, together we can figure out how to get to the next phase of the music industry and what it looks like.
The Sept. 10 event is aimed to attract a wide range of attendees including entrepreneurial movers-and-shakers from across the Southeast, plus music industry decision-makers, including artist managers, record label staff, executives, attorneys, business managers, media, marketing and publicity communities.

Evan Lowenstein, Founder/CEO of Stageit.com will be one of the day’s two featured keynote speakers offering a discussion titled, The Artist as Entrepreneur. “He’s an artist and a serial entrepreneur,” says Carlson. “Evan understands idea incubation, the steps it takes to build out, get capital and then go into the marketplace. He is personally out selling his platform to everyone he can get in front of. To me, that is the true entrepreneurial spirit. And he is a great speaker…”
The cast of panelists forms a representative who’s who from top line national companies blended with techno-stars of the local business and music scenes.
Dream Project Competition
This year’s newest segment, The Dream Project competition, will have two categories—content owners (record labels, managers, publishers, artists) and digital start-ups. Three finalists will be chosen from each of the two groups and the six plans will be presented live to the Summit audience throughout the day. A panel of experienced judges will pick one winner from each category. Winners will receive a cash prize, recognition in MusicRow magazine and get special mentoring. “It’s symbiotic,” says Carlson, echoing her overview of the day’s mission. “Because the music industry desperately needs technology to push forward and the technology industry needs content to drive the structure it creates. Both sides really need each other.”
